Birth control is using a method of contraception to ensure that pregnancy does not occur when you do have sexual intercourse.

Types of Birth Control

There are many different types of birth control methods that vary in how effective they are in preventing unwanted pregnancy, how much they cost, how easy they are to use, and whether they also protect against STDs. Using two types of birth control methods, such as the birth control pill and condoms, increases protection against both pregnancy and STDs. You and your partner should figure out the best choice of birth control for the both of you.

If you have sexual intercourse, you are always at risk for pregnancy and STDs. But if you practice safer sex with only one partner and you make good decisions about birth control, you can greatly lower your risk.

Information on birth control can be too much and can confuse you. Talk with your partner and your doctor before making a choice. Remember, the most effective form of birth control is abstinence (not having sex).
