Alcohol Abuse

Alcohol Abuse ImageAlcohol abuse and alcohol dependence are not only adult problems -- they also affect a significant number of adolescents and young adults between the ages of 12 and 20, even though drinking under the age of 21 is illegal.

How can you determine if you are a victim of alcohol abuse? Answering the following questions can help you determine if you do:

  • Have you ever felt the need to cut back on the amount you drink?
  • Have people criticized your drinking habits?
  • Do you recall feeling guilty about your drinking habits?
  • Have you used alcohol first thing in the morning to relieve stress or a hangover?

If you answered "yes" to one of the questions above then you may be experiencing an alcohol problem. If you answered “yes” to more than one question, the likelihood of an alcohol abuse problem is greater. In either case, it is important that you see a health care professional right away to discuss your habits. The health care professional can help you decide whether you have an alcohol abuse problem and recommend the best methods to help regain control of your life.

If you answered “no” to all of the above questions, if you experience drinking-related problems with your job, relationships, health, or the law, you should find professional help. The effects of alcohol abuse can be very costly and deadly both to you and to others around you.
